Emotional Regulation

The emotional regulation is the capacity that people have to perceive, identify, evaluate, react and get related to emotions in a particular context. Many times in our daily acting we find situations that alter our mood and so we need emotional regulation, being affected by not having it. The emotional regulation processes begin in the moment that emotions present, for both positive and negative emotions. Let´s remember that emotions have an adaptive response roll, having a variation on every person emotion relation, depending on: the capacity that they have to manage emotions, self- perception, it also varies depending on the capacity of learning and acting, without forgetting the context where it is. We can observe that emotions are deregulated when:

High intensity in emotions

  • Poor emotion comprehension
  • Negative reaction to the emotional state
  • Inadequate actions to the emotional management
  • Don´t achieve goals

The ineffective strategies to regulate emotions are: several control strategies, experiential avoiding, preoccupation, control security, monitoring, suppression, rejection, take the literal meaning of everything, inhibition and catharsis.
